Reporting Threshold Increase for Motor Collisions in Ontario

Effective January 1 2025

Reporting threshold for motor vehicle collisions in Ontario has increased to $5000 (total combined damage).

This is an increase from the previous $2000 reporting threshold.

Reporting a Motor Vehicle Collision (MVC) to Enforcement Authorities

a)  If there is a fire or ambulatory injury, CALL 911

b)  Take Collision Scene Photo

i.  BEFORE any vehicles are moved,

ii. This is the only way to substantiate your claims as to what occurred.

c) If there is Under $5000 total combined damage

You ARE NOT required to report MVC to local authorities and you ARE NOT required to report to a Collision Reporting Centre (CRC).  All parties involved should agree on this.

i. Make sure you have good collision scene photos, BEFORE vehicles are moved,
ii. Exchange information (DL#, ownership, insurance, etc.) with other driver.
iii. If you believe you are not ’at fault’ and will be making an insurance claim, make sure you retain other drivers information & collision scene photos. if you are not ’at fault’, a claim is unlikely to impact your insurance rates.

d) If there is Over $5000 total combined damage

Or any MVC involving a personal Injury, mobility device, pedestrian/cyclist, suspended DL, uninsured, impaired driver, assaults, Fail to Remain or other criminal activity.

i. Make sure you have good collision scene photos, BEFORE vehicles are moved,
ii. Exchange information (DL#, ownership, insurance, etc.) with other driver,
iii. Call WRPS 519-570-9777,
iv. Get an incident #,
v. Attend a Collision Reporting Centre as soon as possible, having the incident # in advance will assist in speeding up the process,
vi. Get a copy of the Collision Reporting Centre report ,
vii. Collision scene photos may now be uploaded directly to ASSI at https://accsupport.com/upload-photos/

Remember:

• Protect yourself. Take good collision scene photos,
• The driver of the vehicle is responsible to ensure MVC’s are reported correctly,
• Complete a Collision/Incident/Damage report for any dangerous occurrence involving a City of Kitchener vehicle or equipment,
• ‘At Fault’ collisions may impact your personal insurance rates and/or driving privileges at the City of Kitchener.
